I think it would be well worth investing in a more expensive backpack if something waterproof / water resistant is what you’re after. Best rugged backpack?
In general, Jansport and osprey are about as well built as I have ever seen. The North Face borealis is the best school backpack I have ever used. I wreck stuff just by owning it.

Light pack for longer walks/hikes
Any particular carry style you want? Running vests are a great, lightweight option for day hike/long walks. Can throw in a water bladder and just use that for yourself and the dog. I feel a little silly wearing one for walks, but once I'm actually moving I forget about it because it's so comfy. Ther
