NAS

I've done the DIY, holy fuck does a Synology NAS just remove all the hard bullshit from your plate. Highly recommend just starting there. I've got the DS 423, it's been bulletproof.

How well does a Pi 5 work as a NAS?

I personally don't like Pi's, I've just had too many fail on me, BUT! 1Gbit ethernet, do you need more than 1Gbit? What are you going to actually be doing on it? Unless you're going to be doing some heavy data transfer, you don't need over 1Gbit. ARM Processor, have a look at the specifications of s

Help on making a Plex PC Server

The i5-13500 (plus plexpass) makes a fantastic transcoding combination, able to transcode, for most of us anyway, to the moon and back. I'd not expect any issues. In RAMpocalypse times, I'd not go to 32GB; if it's just a Plex and the -Arrs server, 8GB is enough, but get 16GB just to have some extra

Synology NAS harddrive question

Regular consumer NAS models no longer have the drive restrictions. I assume you're not looking to get an enterprise NAS so you should be fine getting a consumer model like a DS series. If you are still interested in getting a Synology NAS, make sure it's a plus (+) model and choose one with AVX supp

Meet the X15: the first server purpose-built for Unraid

Yes, it’s all obsolete. Google me this: “Synology ds423 plus with four disks wattage”. 8 watts idle, 28 watts fully going. That’s what Google tells me. You? And will destroy your setup for plex, but otherwise about 75 percent as fast. And it’s a 2019 cpu. That’s what 9 years gets. I understand the d

Very Impressed with Immich!

Thanks for your feedback, very much appreciated :)! Yea, I realized that any serious bulk upload from mobile app is somewhat hard, there are quite a few posts/threads about that scattered here and there on reddit and other boards. I think there is some room for improvements for the devs, we shall se

PMS on pc or NAS?

I use a Syno DS423+ with Intel Celeron J4125 CPU (a 2019 CPU with Intel QuickSync capable iGPU). I have PlexPass. I think it's fantastic. I have 5 AppleTV devices around the house, and I share this out with perhaps five other frequent users and 5 other infrequent users. I have 100mbps up and gigabit

PMS on pc or NAS?

Your NAS has the same CPU as the Synology DS423+ that someone mentioned to you below. If you're using hardware transcoding (Plex pass required) you can get around 2 4k transcodes out of it. I had a similar NAS and transcoding wasn't my problem. The thing that improved the most when I upgraded to a m

Reliable NAS for Time Machine?

Any modern NAS would do pretty well here; TM is table stakes in 2026. I have a Synology DS423+ and a few drives doing this now; works fine.
