Why are NAS systems still a niche thing
The Synology DiskStation DS124 (a home NAS) is at 200 euro.it supports 1 drive, so if that drive fails you are roasted.a 1TB samsung SSD is around 200 euro.so 400 euro with no failsafe. The Synology DS725+ (anjother home nas) is at 550 euro.it takes 2 disks, so one is a failsafe backup of the other.

Daughter on the way - looking to build for storage backup, cloud and media
A Synology DS425+ at $500-ish, a little less on sale (check Slickdeals) is where I would start, but the bottom starts these days at the DS124, which is just $143. Only 1 bay, but perfectly fine as a file storage location.

Stromkosten nicht vergessen. Ein alter PC ist zwar nochmal deutlich flexibler, wenns ums Experimentieren mit Selfhostingsachen geht, aber auch teurer. Am I just wasting my time?
Self host for yourself, and by that I mean in case of Minecraft servers, do let your friends play there. As soon as you begin thinking “I’ll move my entire extended family to this setup”, you’ve failed. First of all, your hobby will turn into a day job (and evenings, and nights, along with weekends

Beginner, getting started with Homeservers
Hey, while you can learn things from a pre-built nas like this one or other brands, it's mostly installing apps with 1 button. Don't get me wrong, it's super convenient and these stuff are enough for an average user, but I find it limiting for more intermediate things and learning. I'd say it's a go

Where Do I Start?
I know it will go against the accepted setup in this sub but for your usage I would go with a Synology DS124 single bay drive. You can currently order one from Walmart for $150 bucks according to their website so this would give you more leeway to spend on a bigger hard drive. They’ve got 20TB for $

Best Mini PC to host torrents? Looking for options to purchase a compact PC to have a small server to host torrents 24/7/365.
If it's only for Torrents, the Synology DiskStation DS124 for less than $140, if it's in a cool location it will be completely silent. power consumption is 3-10 watts, so in some examples it can pay for itself. takes a 3.5" drive, so you'll need the bracket to hold the ssd in place ($10). The client

Thinking of moving from Synology to Qnap... maybe?
Really like my Synology, the only thing that winds me up about my ds124 is that you have to ssh in to view SMART data.
