woohoo!
Even with the push for "branded drives" in a Synology, I'd be moving that way if I were you. I have a Synology 5-Bay DiskStation DS1525+ (Diskless) that I got off Amazon for $699 (Now $799) back in July of 2024. I populated it with 16Tb Ironwolf drives. Never been happier. I migrated all my Drobo 5S

Best solution to my storage needs.
Pulled this from a chat gpt response of what you said above... The simplest “best fit” build for your numbers 4 bay NAS + 4 x 10TB or 4 x 12TB drives in RAID5 (or Synology SHR). • 4 x 10TB in RAID5 gives about 27TB usable • 4 x 12TB in RAID5 gives about 33TB usable That lands right in your 20 to 24T

Luego i

DIY Routers
I’m not looking to get enterprise level but there are things I would want to do that go beyond basic packet switching and routing (eg. basic security features, VLAN’s, maybe even VPN). My plan would be to set it up on a Qotom mini pc. Something that has 2.5 GbE ports. Never thought to use it in a vi

Festplatte

WHY NOCTUA OR ANY AFTER MARKET FAN CAN BE BAD FOR A SYNOLOGY NAS
Be careful - I just got the Pure Wings 2 92mm and they are 0.32A and 3.84W, not 0.15A. But even worse, they do not fit mechanically into my DS1525+ - the shrouds dont fit the Synology case.

Editing off UGreen dxp4800 Plus
Try and report back! I sometimes edit off a Synology DS1525+ over 2.5GBe and it's passable.

Adding Storage to a future UniFi Setup
I prefer my Synology NAS. I map drives on Windows and use with regular explorer or save windows... Yup, setup VPN on the Gateway, then from a pc vpn into your network. If you link your gateway to your Ubiquiti account, you can see it on the Unifi app. From there you can see you your ip address if it
