I really really need help
If he only had 1 VPN, there's a chance the one that he subscribed to isn't working in China at this time. Out of the 6 VPNs I've tried, only 2 actually work here in China (specifically Sichuan Province, Chengdu). For me, NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, AstrillVPN, StrongVPN didn't work. Maybe he got
