The only thing you could try is downloading a current firmware for the Verse Pro Color, put it unzipped onto the root folder of your device and look what, respectively if any

Oh and I turned off the syncing. I noticed it tends to drain the battery a little bit faster (it's only noticeable on small devices with small batteries only, like the Go6, or the Verse in the case of pocketbook devices). I don't mind that my books aren't synced between my different devices.

Very likely a device issue, never had such problems with any of my PocketBooks. Just to be 100% sure, you could also test this specific epub on your InkPad (but if it is a legally obtained epub, the issue is very likely the Verse).
