Z5ii. megapixels aren't everything, and if you don't need the additional features of the z6iii, the z5ii would be perfect. the added capability of the expeed7 processor makes enough difference over the dual expeed6 of the z6ii and z7ii

Z5ii unless you’re planning to do lots of video, in which case Z6iii. Z5ii and Z6iii have the newer EXPEED 7 processor and have much better autofocus as a result than Z6ii or Z7ii. Z5ii has more dynamic range than Z6iii under ISO 800 (they’re about the same above ISO 800). Z6iii is much more capable

Try out Expeed 7 (basically everything newer than the Z6ii/Z7ii)

On a settings banks equipped modern camera (EXPEED 5 and later at least, might go back to the EXPEED 4), you can also set it to change between banks with a simple button+dial with your eye to the finder and immediate feedback, just like you'd adjust exposure compensation or ISO. AF-C Also, this is the Achilles heel of the Z7II - gorgeous output, sucks at focusing on dogs running towards you (this is literally how I test AF). It's the dual Expeed 6 - they just can't keep up - and it's why I want an Expeed 7 Z7III (NOT A Z8!!! - I WANT THIS SENSOR). It was a night and day dif

Go with the Z5ii or Z6iii. I would only recommend the Z7ii if you need the extra megapixels for some reason. Both the Zii and the Z6ii use the outdated Expeed 6 processor, which puts them at a disadvantage in terms of autofocus subject tracking, burst rates, and video capabilities compared to the Ex

From what I gathered when I initially bought the Z7 (and not the Z7II) is that it’s a slight improvement but not in the same league as Expeed 7.

The Z7 is older than the Z6ii. It's a downgrade, not an upgrade. OP asked for an upgrade. Even if the Z7 was a viable contender, it would be the Z7ii, which would be a lateral move in all features except for megapixels, which if that's the driving factor, then maybe the Z7ii is worth considering. Z7ii uses the older Expeed 6 processor which is notoriously bad with maintaining focus on fast moving subjects. And not that great with slow moving subjects either. There's a reason everyone on the Nikon subreddits only ever recommends the latest gen camera bodies unless the ONLY thing you shoot are
