I haven't used a D500, but Thom Hogan says that "Indeed, the D7200 is slightly better in usable dynamic range up to about ISO 400, the D500 slightly better than the D7200 above that." PhotonstoPhotos' dynamic range chart bears this out - the D500 is a hair worse under ISO 400 and a hair better above
