If I was getting a new reader right now with side loading in mind I would go for the kobo or I would get a pocketbook verse. As it stands I use a musnap neo with koreader and I have no complaints. The kobo is probably faster though a lot of people say it has no lag when navigating your books.

Musnap Neo with the button case is fantastic. Musnap Ocean is also very nice. I have that in the color version but it comes in black and white only as well. I use the Kindle app and Moonreader Pro on them and the experience is much better than my Paperwhite was.
