My first ThinkPad - X395 with Linux CachyOS

I got my X395 in 2019 (for about 5.5 times the price), but I'm still pretty happy with it. I also run Linux with a tiling window manager (i3 on Manjaro) and I really like it still. Recently replaced the battery, but after 5.5 years that's to be expected. Still pretty happy with the performance (espe

Deciding what to get...

I’d probably discount the T480 - it’s getting up there in age with many spares now unavailable. X395/T495 aren’t too bad on the lower end, depending on price they might be OK.. Option 13 depending on price might also work out (10nm core and Xe iGPU would be good to have). 17 would work well in lieu

Looking to move to a Thinkpad, wondering what would fit my needs.

tl;dr: 16 or more GB RAM model of X13 (13.3 inch) or T14s (14 inch) gen1 AMD would be the closest one that meet your criteria. Help me decide: X395 (AMD) or X390 (Intel)?

AMD in the X395 is more capable than the Intel 8th Gen in the X390, especially graphics, but the X13 Gen 1 AMD, T14s G1 AMD from the following year, saw a significant jump in performance, from 4 Core 8 Thread to 6C/12T and 8C/16T. Graphics are also far stronger. T14s G1, is about an inch wider, bein

Which ThinkPad would you recommend for long-term use?

Main concerns: Both devices are good. Intel T14 g1 is about as good as a T480 (10th gen processors used in Thinkpads are just 8th gen for the most part). On Linux, both will certainly do fine for office work. Windows is getting kind of heavy for both tbh, but light tasks should be fine. Make sure th
