The T470P is the greatest of all time for me now, more than the X230, and even more than the T480, especially with this specific spec (i7-7820HQ, Nvidia 940MX, 2560x1440 panel). I've been wanting to build something like this for a long time. I've seen many people duct tape hard drives to their displ

don't forget improved battery life. I convinced oomf to switch to Linux on his gaming laptop; his battery lasts 4x longer now. later, I sold him one of my ThinkPads (a t480 with 72wh external battery), he's liking it so far (and running Linux on it, of course.)

If only they were always this competent. This must be a mistake on their part. I assume they fire their engineers if they accidentally make good products, which is how we no longer have the likes of the ThinkPad T480 or old Lenovo Legions that didn't randomly die.

The idea that the t480 is the "last great ThinkPad" is bonkers The t490 was just as well built but thinner, the downside was only 1 sodimm slot and only the (much bigger) internal battery. They kept using pretty much the same parts between the t490, t14, and t14 Gen 2. If you really want both sodimm

People are saying Nvidia + Wayland is a solved problem, but I still regularly experience crashes and performance issues on my ThinkPad t480 with an mx150 discrete GPU when using Wayland. I know it's old hardware and I should upgrade, but can't afford to with the current market. I'll be moving away f

If you really need Windows, I recommend Win10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021. Win11 LTSC 2024 also runs pretty well on my x270. But, Win10 LTSC runs great on all of my ThinkPads that range from a T420 to T480, s and non s. But, yeah, definitely install Linux as well.

As a student, you might as well come back to MacBook - brand-new Neo is 850 CAD with education discount, or you should be able to find older M chip Air models under 1000 CAD second hand. You get Microsoft Office IIRC, good battery life, good bright screen (some ThinkPads model configs still somewhat

Depends on your needs. I'd go for the one with the bigger battery and upgrade the SSD by myself. If you want to do AI stuff on the ThinkPad itself: don't. Just offload that to your desktop. Just SSH into it. For frontend development you don't need much. You need VScode, a browser and some CLI tools

Lenovo ThinkPad T480. Cheap, can run windows 11, reliable and built like a tank. Get one with an 8th gen i5 8350u and 16 gb of ram and you’re golden.
