Manufacturer issues remote kill command to disable smart vacuum after engineer blocks it from collecting data — user revives it with custom hardware and Python scripts to run offline
I have an iLife A8 that I bought many years ago. It's a great robot, because it has LIDAR and Camera Navigation... And no hardware onboard to connect to the Cloud. The robot has needed repairs a few times due to motors getting seized by dust, and usual wear and tear on the rollers, brushes, wheels, ...
Roomba robot vacuums could lose (almost) all features as iRobot faces imminent bankruptcy
Once again, these devices should not have Smart apps that are tied to Cloud. It shouldn't be difficult to build in a local API into something that is effectively doing full room mapping, therefore it should have enough processing and RAM onboard to run a basic API... I am so glad the Robot Vacuum I ...
Roomba robot vacuums could lose (almost) all features as iRobot faces imminent bankruptcy
I have a knock off iLife 2017 robot vacuum and it gets trapped under the fridge, pulls cables and thinks the edges of a geometric patterned rug are a cliff so it gets trapped inside a square of the rug. It also sometimes gets too full and vomits everything it has picked up. But it doesn't need wifi/...
What’s the one housekeeping hack that changed your cleaning routine forever?
Years ago, we got an iLife v3s. Nothing fancy. It was on sale and it cost less than a cleaner’s cleaning (although we don’t have house cleaners), so I decided it was worth it to try. Worked great and I still use it in the basement! We’ve had it 7 years now. Las year, we got a Shark AV2501AE and it a...
How do you deal with pet hair everywhere?
Get the robovac. I have two doodles and they shed. I like the new iLife because it has an open shoot for the hair (as opposed to roller bar where the hair was getting stuck) and it self empties and mops. Saves me so much time. I run it every day. Also, I let my dogs on the furniture but I keep every...
Is a Robot Vacuum Really Worth It?
I went from wanting one as a gimmick, to now not being able to even imagine not having one. I'm not home a lot as I'm always at work. When we are home, the last thing we want to do is clean, and I don't mean that in a lazy way either, we get home late and running a vacuum at night would tick off the...
iRobot’s future isn’t looking up
I tried many of the name brand vacuum robots - iRobot, Eufy, Shark. They’re all so disappointing and SO expensive. Mapping is a joke. So is mopping. Right now I have two iLIFE robots. They are cheap and brainless but have good vacuum suction and do a decent job except when it comes to getting stuck ...
Horrible experiences with domestic help in Tamil Nadu
Haha, regarding support and machine life, I’ve been thinking along the same lines 😄 Even if it breaks down after a year, my helper would have swallowed 7k more from me than the machine costs, and would have done an atrocious job. Got an iLife vacuum and mop robot. Was delivered just yesterday so I’...
Maybe a stupid question? How much have vacuums gotten better over the years?
Yes, that's a possibility. However, it also depends on what product you had purchased back then. For instance, iLife and Shark have always been known to be quite shitty, so if you get a decent robot vacuum now it's likely it will be better anyway.
