It’s official - I’m starting school in January

get a refurbished dell xps 13 with 16 gb ram as a budget pick, it will get you thru school, and then upgrade to a beefy thinkpad once you’re close to working. congrats on pulling the trigger!!!! that first step changed my life.

Any downsides to buying a Windows‑only Dell XPS and installing Ubuntu myself instead of getting the Ubuntu‑pre‑installed model

Years ago the XPS 13 developer edition had the fingerprint reader replaced with a simple power button as the fprint reader lacked firmware support on Linux. But since 2020 even that difference is gone. Should be the same hardware AFAIK. Certainly makes sense for Dell to use the same hardware and jus

Linus tests the M5 MacBook Pro in low-power mode in the latest ShortCircuit video

I did it for you. I talked in person with enterprise sales reps from HP, Dell, Lenovo, MSI, and Asus who brought samples looking for a thin and light without a ton of deck flex and a decent screen. The closest I could get to the MacBook was the XPS 13 but it was more expensive or the Razer Blade Ste

Out of warranty and falling apart: my InfinityBook Gen 7 story

I have an IBP 14 Gen 9 AMD. Main issues I have with it are: Battery is about 70% health now, Intermittent sleep issues, Hangs on connecting HDMI sometimes, Some of the screws were loose on arrival, Video doesn’t work with my USB-C dock, No Ethernet drivers in mainline kernel. The webcam / sound / mi

Ubuntu 26.04 - ARM computers

I have a Dell XPS 13 9345 (Snapdragon X Elite) running 26.04 on kernel 7.0.0-13. Broadly it works well. I don't have sound though and power management is still not as good as it struggles to go into hibernation, so if its not plugged in, it will drain to 0 overnight. Camera, wifi, bluetooth, plugin

We need to recognize that unfortunately pricing for any new laptop is going to be high because of the RAM and storage shortage

The X Elite I remember being specifically $100 cheaper in the XPS 13 vs the Intel model. That was the closest comparison laptop then, but even outside of the XPS it was generally cheaper than Intel and AMD I think, just not by a lot. But I did think the X2 would be cheaper and it seems to be the cas

Spoiled by XPS, how is the FW 13?

Agree with all or this. I had 3 XPS 13 over the years. Great machines. Was very happy with them. (Always the Ubuntu version) Then at the start of the year bought the current XPS 13 with the damn XPS 13 Plus design (they discontinued the old XOS 13 line and dropped the plus from the variant line). A

Refurb FW13 with 13th Gen Intel

Former XPS 13 9380 with an 8th gen here, so I feel this one. Refurbed 13th gen FW13 sounds like an excellent plan to me; that's a good re-use of your existing assets, and you won't find anything cheaper from Framework unless you cobble together something from parts. Assuming the specs fit your needs

I am trying to decide between the Dell Pro 14 and the XPS 14. I was quoted $1400 for the Pro and $2100 for the XPS. I am most concerned about storage, durability, life expectancy. Any suggestions?? Thank you!

Obviously it isn't correct to say that you aren't missing anything at all. However, again, given that you don't know if you're missing anything or what you would be missing, you won't be able to tell the difference. Both devices will feel like a massive upgrade coming from a 2011 XPS 13. I say that
