GriGri vs. ClickUp: Why does the GriGri remain the default for beginners when the ClickUp feels more intuitive to me?

I've never used a Click Up, but when I've been belayed with them, even by people I know to be experienced and competent belayers, I've found them very prone to unwanted lock-ups and brutal short-roping. But then the highly unfashionable Alpine Up is my preferred device for half rope belaying, so ...

GriGri vs. ClickUp: Why does the GriGri remain the default for beginners when the ClickUp feels more intuitive to me?

I’ve never used a click up but I’ve used a grigri for seven years. I’ve climbed in the UK, across Europe, in Thailand and Australia, and with climbers from around the world, and with a few exceptions every single climber I’ve met has a grigri. When I meet someone who doesn’t, the first question is “

What would be the perfect belay device for you?

Can't rappel on double ropes with a grigri or pilot or mamumut smart or click-up. Belaying from the top sucks with a neox. I used an ATC for awhile but lowering from above is way harder. I also used the gigajul for a bit but was a little rough with thicker ropes

GriGri vs. ClickUp: Why does the GriGri remain the default for beginners when the ClickUp feels more intuitive to me?

I've got similar feelings, I can't belay on ClickUp to save my life but I strongly believe that AlpineUp is the best thing since we had sliced bread. It allows much faster and safer belaying in my opinion.

GriGri vs. ClickUp: Why does the GriGri remain the default for beginners when the ClickUp feels more intuitive to me?

I also think that the structural distinction between the ClickUp and standard assisted-braking tubes, such as the Smart or Mega Jul, is an important variable. The lack of a designed thumb-catch or ergonomic method to momentarily hold the ClickUp open while paying out slack often necessitate an awkwa

GriGri vs. ClickUp: Why does the GriGri remain the default for beginners when the ClickUp feels more intuitive to me?

i think the Smart 2 and bd Pilot and similar is better for sport climbing lmao and for rapping on a multi, Grigri is still the best the one time i used a click up, i had more trouble on it than any other belay device i tried (for the first time)

Is the Trango Vergo a good pick?

Just seems like they were designed to change the game, and to try to become the new standard, since the community has been stuck on the grigri for going on three decades. Problem with that is the game doesn't need to be changed, anything the grigri needed petzl came along and changed in the next ite

I am a crappy belayer

I know what you mean, some devices have more active assisted braking like the GriGri and others are more passive. That sucks, it definitely seems like a lot of indoor centres are heading in that direction which is frustrating because I've been belaying with an ATC for years, it's what those same cen

I’m considering buying either the Edelrid Giga Jul or the CT Alpine Up for multipitch routes. I want an ABD since I mostly climb with my girlfriend, who is inexperienced and also weighs about 25 kg less than me. Has anyone who has used both been able to give me some advice?

Alpine Up is heavier and bulkier than GigaJul. Honestly I have experience only with Click ups, but I consider that an earlier generation of ABDs (I prefer Gigajul or Mammut Smart as belayer). Edelrid learnt lessons from Click up and Megajul and created Gigajul - I would go for the latter. Speaking o
