The 2 big non-Kindle brands are Kobo and Onyx Boox. the difference being that Boox is Android-based so you can download different apps while Kobo is a closed system like Kindle. The thing about eInk screens is that the limitations of the technology really requires that you use software with UX that is built around those limitations. I have a bunch of Google Play Books on my Kobo using Adobe Digital Editions. While Kobos have better battery life then their Android counterparts, it sounds like you'd prefer an Android ereader. Have you looked at the 7 inch Onyx Boox Go 7 or Go 6?

I'd lean towards Boox too. I bought a Go 7 to read Ao3 (among other things) and it's great for browsing the website for tonight's selection. If your jumpy with fics or browsing is part of the experience for you then android all the way. I will say though if you have the extra money to spend on a Go
