I believe Merlinwrt is much like the Asus stock (it's what Merlin is based off of) but with just a few added tweaks like better vlan configurations and multiple wireless lan configuration and SSH access and better firewall configuration, and VPN. That's pretty much the same with freshtomato, it give

That's a very tough call, because the rt-ac68u is pretty hard to beat imo. I have friends that got one around the time it came out (yes even the T-Mobile version) and they're still running strong. Most friends I have that still use them are running freshtomato firmware on it. I'd say the minimum I w

Perfect! Just pick up another cheap ASUS router. Even second hand off eBay will do. You can get something like an RT-AC68U / AC1900 for under 30 bucks. Factory reset it, put it into wireless bridge mode or add it as an AiMesh node, plug it into your printerand you’re in business!

If a AC68U was working for ya, just get a Flint 2. $140 but probably $130 or less around black Friday.

No way, Jose. That 86U is $20 on ebay right now. The Express 7 is over 10x the cost. Don't plan for the future, plan for the now. Your RT-AC68U that you have has a bandwidth of 1.3Gbps across all clients. This router youre planning to buy unironically has a 10Gbps WAN port and the aggregate bandwidt

When j looked it up a while back they said openwrt somehow doesn't support ac68U's with radio. Haven't followed up on that as that really didn't bother me much. I have 5 mx3800 that gives full WiFi 6 coverage of my home. I don't need more WiFi 5 signal to crowd the airwaves. I chose Batman in the be

Yes, it's a bad idea in 2026. It's too expensive for what it is. Save up for the Flint 2 or get a cheap, used OpenWRT supported router such as the ASUS RT-AC68u. About as powerful as the flint 1.

I had an Asus RT-AC68U flashed with merlin. It was one of the T-Mobile AC1900s that I got dirt cheap new, when the 68U was almost $200. It was the most rock solid consumer electronic device I've ever had. I never rebooted it outside of updates. It never skipped a beat. It lives on as an AP in my bud
