Bad advice. Asus routers are actually amazing products, and enhancing it with merlin firmware make it the best routers you can buy, in my humble opinion. I've only ever had 2 Asus routers, one i bought in 2013 (AC68U), which lasted until they discontinued it in March 2024. And I bought the replaceme

You mention Asus here, and my impression is that Asus normally have a quite long support time for their products. The absence of a firmware update for a while, does not mean that the product is end of support. A driver behind why Asus normally have had quite good long term support over the last 10 y

Most more-than-basic wireless routers will allow you to set up your network the way you want it. You can assimilate all bands into the same SSID or you can separate your 2.4G and 5G networks (and 6G for Wifi 7) into different SSIDs. If you assign SSIDs like your previous wireless router (and use the

I'd been using it for over 10 years, it served me so well. Just tonight my unit stopped working...FYI they still update the firmware, the last one dated 2025/10/27, very recent:https://www.asus.com/networking-iot-servers/wifi-routers/asus-wifi-routers/rtac68u/helpdesk_bios?model2Name=RTAC68U Other m

Between those choices, I'd go with the Asus. I've used their routers in the past (rt-ac68u and rt-ac1900p) and they did great, very easy to work with. I still have them with freshtomato firmware, I just don't currently use them, but figured if I ever do incorporate them back in, they'll work great a

I believe Merlinwrt is much like the Asus stock (it's what Merlin is based off of) but with just a few added tweaks like better vlan configurations and multiple wireless lan configuration and SSH access and better firewall configuration, and VPN. That's pretty much the same with freshtomato, it give

That's a very tough call, because the rt-ac68u is pretty hard to beat imo. I have friends that got one around the time it came out (yes even the T-Mobile version) and they're still running strong. Most friends I have that still use them are running freshtomato firmware on it. I'd say the minimum I w

Breathed new life into my Asus RT-AC68U. Enabled CTF and it's blazing away been up for over 10 days - something that had become impossible with some of the more recent DD-WRT releases. Thanks for your work on this project! Donation sent.

A decent amount of ASUS routers get updates for many years. My AC68U got its latest firmware update just two months ago, despite being 11 years old. Can't say the same for others like Netgear and Zyxel.
