Watch SE (2nd Gen)

If they use iPhones you can get a brand new Apple Watch SE for $249. It is a nice watch and definitely has bells and whistles (lol) but the watch can be setup on a parent’s device and managed that way. As an adult runner I use AW U2 and am super happy with it.

Same here with Apple Watch SE 3 and AirPods Pro 3. Restarting watch, as recommended in these comments, fixed it, but wish I had known that on the two flights where all my downloaded music and podcasts were on my watch, not on my phone (which is too full to have room for it).

If you really want live maps + Strava + music without your phone, you’re already above the “basic smartwatch” level. Quick take: Forerunner 165 → great running watch, but no real on-watch maps.
