If they use iPhones you can get a brand new Apple Watch SE for $249. It is a nice watch and definitely has bells and whistles (lol) but the watch can be setup on a parent’s device and managed that way. As an adult runner I use AW U2 and am super happy with it.

Apple Watch SE → fine everyday watch, but not ideal if you want to run without your phone and rely on maps

Apple Watch SE — has the basics and I use my timer EVERY SHIFT. Vital if I don’t have my watch it’s a bad day

Since you use an iPhone, the answer is pretty simple. Just buy an apple watch se, the most affordable one you can find.
