Investigators wrangled video from Nancy Guthrie’s Google Nest camera out of ‘backend systems’
That’s why you buy the cheap Chinese amcrest and reolinks toss them onto their own VLAN that’s segmented from your network and the open internet. I have 10 4k amcrest cameras and 1 Reolink doorbell camera/chime that all play very nicely with frigate and home assistant

Confused with what camera we need, battery, wifi, poe, 1080/2k/4k etc, just for our residential property? I was considering 1080p main front camera, possibly PoE or USB powered.
WiFi camera (Ring, Nest, etc) are convenience camera, not security or surveillance cameras. They in varying degrees rely on the cloud to operate and are easily jammed/disabled, in addition to different limits on their use without subscriptions. Surveillance cameras will typically be described in meg

Best cheap 4K outdoor camera for Homebridge/Scrypted?
Bonus points if it’s PoE 4k over wifi should be a dealbreaker for you. Especially a "budget" 4k over wifi cam. Also, you don't need 4k as much as you think you do. Hikvision is the best option with Amcrest second; if that's too expensive, reolink 510a (not 4k but again, better quality than most 4k b

Any home security camera systems without subscription?
All my cameras are Amcrest PoE and none require a subscription. Reolinks are similar. There are actually quite a few to choose from, but I'm not entirely sure where you are on budget friendly. The Amcrest cameras I buy are around $80-$95 each. The high end of that is 4K resolution, night vision, AI

Ok fine, I'm biting the bullet. What do I need?
"Assuming I want to buy other brands of cameras AND still want AI object/pet/face/human/car detection, what do I need to accommodate 8-10 cameras (let's say 2x 4K and the rest 2K resdolution)?" Right now AI for 3rd party cams in Protect is limited to using an AI Port. That'll add AI to one 4K cam. I

Opening a new business soon, what type of security cameras would you guys recommend?
It depends on the specific setup I guess. What do you stand to lose? What is your threat? Can you modify the building and run wires? Are you leasing a place for not much longer, or there long term? Lights always on, or need IR? I would use cameras that are wired only, and can be Power over Ethernet

ONVIF Cameras
I had an Amcrest 180 cam paired to an AI Port mounted above the garage. It worked ok and was even pretty decent at LPR, but the curvature was pretty severe. And as folks have mentioned below, you need to run it at a lower resolution to meet the requirements of using a 3rd party ONVIF cam in Protect.

Camera recommendations
Ring is notorious for heavy compression, which kills license plate details. If you want to actually read plates, you need a camera with a high frame rate and optical zoom, like an Amcrest or Reolink 4K PoE camera.

Is Reolink really the best overall for a reliable, non-subscription security system for newbies? After going through past posts in this sub, Reolink seems to be the most recommended. But in reading some negative reviews on Amazon, I want to be sure it really is the best option.
After some research amcrest /dahua seemed like the best combination of camera quality, price, and support for me. I wanted to have both phone and email support for my security cameras just in case I encountered an issue that I couldnt fix . Ive had the amcrest and dahua security cameras for over 7 y

Identifying suspicious cars
LPRs are specifically built for high frame rates, no standard camera is going to have 60-120fps needed to capture license plates; it's why a 60$ Amcrest is good enough for general purposes at 20-30fps but an LPR is 500$+ A little library at the edge of your property sounds like the play.
