Confused with what camera we need, battery, wifi, poe, 1080/2k/4k etc, just for our residential property? I was considering 1080p main front camera, possibly PoE or USB powered.
WiFi camera (Ring, Nest, etc) are convenience camera, not security or surveillance cameras. They in varying degrees rely on the cloud to operate and are easily jammed/disabled, in addition to different limits on their use without subscriptions. Surveillance cameras will typically be described in meg

3rd-party Onvif Motion Detection after Update to Protect 7.1.46
i noticed this on my 7.1.46 update too - think they quietly enabled basic onvif motion events. the api changelog mentions event webhooks now work for non unifi cams. you can disable it per camera under recording settings but its buried. if you want full motion zone control the amcrest onvif cams han

Any home security camera systems without subscription?
All my cameras are Amcrest PoE and none require a subscription. Reolinks are similar. There are actually quite a few to choose from, but I'm not entirely sure where you are on budget friendly. The Amcrest cameras I buy are around $80-$95 each. The high end of that is 4K resolution, night vision, AI

Ok fine, I'm biting the bullet. What do I need?
"Assuming I want to buy other brands of cameras AND still want AI object/pet/face/human/car detection, what do I need to accommodate 8-10 cameras (let's say 2x 4K and the rest 2K resdolution)?" Right now AI for 3rd party cams in Protect is limited to using an AI Port. That'll add AI to one 4K cam. I

Protect does motion recording for ONVIF cameras?
on your comment about ONVIF as an example these are message topics that an ONVIF client can subscribe to as an example, ONVIF cameras may do motion or AI on camera, and when they do they send a simple 'true' to the topics as a message - all UI needs to do is be continuously buffering ONVIF cameras i

ONVIF Cameras
I had an Amcrest 180 cam paired to an AI Port mounted above the garage. It worked ok and was even pretty decent at LPR, but the curvature was pretty severe. And as folks have mentioned below, you need to run it at a lower resolution to meet the requirements of using a 3rd party ONVIF cam in Protect.

Camera recommendations
Ring is notorious for heavy compression, which kills license plate details. If you want to actually read plates, you need a camera with a high frame rate and optical zoom, like an Amcrest or Reolink 4K PoE camera.

Identifying suspicious cars
LPRs are specifically built for high frame rates, no standard camera is going to have 60-120fps needed to capture license plates; it's why a 60$ Amcrest is good enough for general purposes at 20-30fps but an LPR is 500$+ A little library at the edge of your property sounds like the play. Round One goes to the G6 Instant
I had that debate with myself as well. My Amcrest cams were already installed and running on Surveillance Station, so swapping them out for Unifi cams meant climbing up to the soffits and other places I have them mounted and remounting new cams that are essentially the same. Then I'd be stuck with a

Single security camera with cloud storage
Amcrest may work for you if you want wired. Their cloud service starts at $6 per month ($10 for 4k) for 7 days retention of motion detection recordings. They also offer longer terms for retention as well as continuous recording. Ive also got several arlo wireless cameras that work well enough but th
