An extra $20 to remove ads from a Kindle you’d own to read books you pay for
You can jailbreak your kindles! There are easy to follow guides online and I highly recommend it! Fuck Amazon

Amazon to end support for older Kindles, prompting user outcry
Stick the Kindle in "Airplane mode", and just manually upload your books. Been doing it that way for years, as it also prevents Amazon removing purchased books form your device when they remove them from the store.

For the first time ever, Amazon is cutting old Kindles off from the Kindle Store
This. I own a 2012 Kindle and this is how I'll use it from now on. Amazon has just made sure that I won't ever buy a kindle again from them, although I think the device is great, mine works flawlessly still.

I'm pulling the triger tonight, which do you recommend?
Kobo clara bw. It might be more expensive than the kindle basic but it's waterproof and has warm light and the kindle basic doesn't have those. You might also wait a couple of days and see if it will get any discounts.

Amazon to end support for older Kindles, prompting user outcry
Every kindle comes with an email address which can be used to send yourself books, you can find/change the email address for yours on the Amazon website. If they're cutting off access to download books from the kindle store, it sounds like you may still be able to find and email yourself copies. Als

Amazon thanks loyal Kindle devotees by bricking their kit
They're not exactly bricking them (at least not unless you reset the device), they're blocking any ability to use the Amazon store. As long as you can live without the store and read existing titles, your Kindle will be still usable.

Starting in May, pre-2013 Kindles won't be able to buy or download new books
I'm a daily user of a 2012 Kindle. It still works flawlessly and the battery is still strong, it's the best electronic device that I own and I hope that it lasts another decade. Due to Amazon's policy to make it less useful I won't ever purchase another Kindle.

Pre-2012 Kindles are being bricked
Not being bricked, and 15 years of support is pretty damn good. Basically Amazon just isn’t letting you use their store because I’m sure it’s a nightmare to maintain that tier of hardware. Jailbreaking Kindles has never been a better experience, I’d 100% just go that route and add books via Calibre.

What’s one piece of technology you aren’t fond of but everyone else is?
...But some old school part of me just hates Kindles. I also use to hate ebook readers with an "old school passion". Then I got one. The convenience of essentially having a library I can carry round with me was just too seductive. (I had a Kindle for several years, but then got fed up with the changes

My Kindle is an ad filled wasteland and I regret buying it.
TL;DR: OP’s problems are user error It’s a very bad and misleading summary because OP is purposefully clicking on the home page, which they would never have to see otherwise. The purpose of that page is literally to explore ads for new books that you might like. For example, it currently shows me ni
