Amazon to end support for older Kindles, prompting user outcry
Stick the Kindle in "Airplane mode", and just manually upload your books. Been doing it that way for years, as it also prevents Amazon removing purchased books form your device when they remove them from the store.

Amazon thanks loyal Kindle devotees by bricking their kit
They're not exactly bricking them (at least not unless you reset the device), they're blocking any ability to use the Amazon store. As long as you can live without the store and read existing titles, your Kindle will be still usable.

My Kindle is an ad filled wasteland and I regret buying it.
TL;DR: OP’s problems are user error It’s a very bad and misleading summary because OP is purposefully clicking on the home page, which they would never have to see otherwise. The purpose of that page is literally to explore ads for new books that you might like. For example, it currently shows me ni

Starting in May, pre-2013 Kindles won't be able to buy or download new books
Yes, and if you're worried about Amazon ever completely locking down your device in the future with a software update, just put your device in airplane mode and leave it there. Besides saving power, it prevents software updates. You don't really need them if you use Calibre to put books on your Kind

Amazon thanks loyal Kindle devotees by bricking their kit
That is only one of the features of the device tho. Plenty of people here have abandoned amazon and still uses their kindle to sideload books they've bought elsewhere. That's the whole purpose of calibre - ebook management Dont need the stupid store

Amazon to end support for older Kindles, prompting user outcry
Best solution to this problem, by far in my experience. It's a little less convenient, but airplane mode + Calibre + USB cable is the way to go. I haven't used the Amazon store in years for e-Books, but my Kindle still works.

I’m getting into reading, I’m looking at e-readers but the Kindle 2012 discontinuation has scared me off kindles
So you buy a kindle now and it may not be able to use Amazon's services in.... 14 years? But you can still side load all you want. My dude. I know some people like to show off pictures on this subreddit of older e-readers saying "Ol' faithful here has been with me since the dawn of e-ink and is stil

My first gen Kindle is no longer going to be supported soon...
You can't DeDRM any newer Kindle books to my knowledge. But you can sideload already de-DRM'd books onto a Kobo or other eReader. Since 2010? I've gone from Nook to Kindle to Kobo, and I have both my b&n and Amazon libraries on my Libra Color.

Amazon to end support for older Kindles, prompting user outcry
How is an e reader that can still work perfectly fine, except not connect to the Amazon store, e-waste. I had a kindle for 4 years and never once did I download a book from the Amazon store. I sent them via email or with a USB cable
