They're not exactly bricking them (at least not unless you reset the device), they're blocking any ability to use the Amazon store. As long as you can live without the store and read existing titles, your Kindle will be still usable.

I'm a daily user of a 2012 Kindle. It still works flawlessly and the battery is still strong, it's the best electronic device that I own and I hope that it lasts another decade. Due to Amazon's policy to make it less useful I won't ever purchase another Kindle.

Not being bricked, and 15 years of support is pretty damn good. Basically Amazon just isn’t letting you use their store because I’m sure it’s a nightmare to maintain that tier of hardware.
