UKLAOP finds out you can't force companies to support a decade old piece of tech
The lack of empathy on here just because they didn't know where to turn for advice is really quite something. It's great that you're the world's leading expert on how to use Kindles without Amazon but this person just sees a big company choosing to make their product obsolete. I can understand why t

Sad trombone noises...
For me this is amazon shooting themselves in the foot. I have a jailbrokekn 4th gen and could download awz3 files into calibre from the device, then reload them into Koreader perfectly. This means I can't do that any more. End result, I'm keeping my device. It works great, I don't want to create mor

Books with this vibe 😍??
Oof that reminds me of a post apocalyptic romance where in the epilogue from the MMCs perspective the FMC is going to give birth to twins and he basically says something like “meh, women have been doing this without medical help for thousands of years, no biggie” and I wanted to throw my kindle out

Pre-2012 Kindles are being bricked
In recent months Amazon has been cracking down on your ability to move your purchased books library away from their ecosystem. They’ve been changing the drm and eliminating the ability to get the files from your kindle. These old devices are the remaining door for getting your library downloaded. If

Amazon dropping some Kimdle Support
Amazon is deliberately blocking the use of perfectly fine hardware to push their shitty form of capitalism. They absolutely have the ability to support the older Kindles but made this choice in order to push additional purchases of new devices. It's not about getting your money's worth. Why does any

UKLAOP finds out you can't force companies to support a decade old piece of tech
I think LAOP has misunderstood the email. It doesn't sound like Amazon is remote detonating the thing, just it will lose access to the store to purchase new books. My best guess is it will stop receiving software updates which will prevent access to the store, and while that is frustrating, it is al

Amazon to end support for older Kindles, prompting user outcry
Other devices don't have a built in kill-switch. Other devices allow you to install your own software so you can use it how you like for as long as you like. Amazon intentionally put work into making sure that was impossible. It is actually harder to design a system that is locked down like this. Ma

What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie?
Yeah, fuck Amazon for a lot of things but especially for remote bricking my used kindle after 2 years of use ... Bought a Kobo and it's been the best decision ever, no more hassle with sending books via email to get them onto your device!!! The shit people put up with out of "convenience".

Pre-2012 Kindles are being bricked
On the one hand, yes I agree that 15 years of support is very impressive. On the other hand, it’s a damn eReader. All it has to do is display text and occasionally show a greyscale image. These aren’t exactly pushing the limits of the tech and given how relatively small ebook files are, it’s costing
