Need to buy a Kindle Fire — advice on the kids version?
My daughter's kids Fire has the ability to be signed in as her profile (Amazon Kids+) or as mine (a regular adult profile). The adult profile is passcode-protected, but once unlocked there's very little that can be limited on it. That said: yes, you can absolutely use the kids Fire as an adult fire.

Get a refurbished iPad on eBay - I got an iPad 4 for $50 and it works perfectly for travel. Cheap kids case on amazon and you’re good to go, and you can download any apps you want instead of being limited to Amazon content on the fire tablet

Choosing a tablet for my 3yr old
Amazon fire kids may suck but the are the best there is for kids. They are easy to set up and have decent parental controls.

iPad vs fire thing?
If this is specifically for flights and you do not already have a tablet at home, the Amazon Fire Kids tablet is the move. It comes with a chunky case that survives being dropped, the Kids+ subscription has a decent library of apps and shows, and if it gets destroyed on a trip you are out maybe $80

Do NOT buy a fire tablet if you don’t know how to install google play store
Kids fire tablet comes with the Amazon kids that has tons of shows, books, apps, games and things that are kid safe. There's no reason to have a google play store on it if you use it right.
