I have just ordered the rare 40th anniversary edition ultimate 3 mode controller which does have a 2.4g dongle that will work with my Xbox, so it should do

It is far from the most attractive thing, but I've had the 8bitdo wireless controller for a couple months now and love it - https://www.8bitdo.com/ultimate-3-mode-controller-rare-40th/ If you get a wired version, they are even cheaper - wireless was just a requirement for me.

You may also want to consider the 8bitdo Ultimate 3-mode Controller (Rare 40th Anniversary Edition). Unlike many other options mentioned here, this wireless xbox controller can be had for ca. $60-70. It has hall effect triggers and joystics.
