Its polyester tarp coated giving it that waterproof slick look. However, because its cheaper material, hot sun, wear & tear, folding can cause the coating to crack & peel. It can happen to most cheap bags of this kind. Some do last a year or 2 without issue with just mild use and avoiding hot sunny

There are so many good ones. Osprey Fairview 55 is a good one, but check out the YouTubes for travel backpack reviews. Chase reeves does some good roundup videos. Nomads Nation, Pack Hacker etc..
