Great for battery life and makes sense, because you don't need it pinging all the time when your pet is at home, right

This was my first thought too. Malinoises are incredible jumpers. A 6' fence would stop most dogs but might barely slow them down. You could also look into a GPS tracking collar like Tractive if this happens again. I hope you find your pup. There's a lot of good advice here.
