I picked up a Sony NEX-5 recently as a side camera and it’s pretty stellar for the age and price, very small and easy to use, if you get the pocket flash for it tho it has a maximum 1/160 shutter speed so keep that in mind for fast moving sets

Honestly, for a beginner, an NEX-5 wouldn't be a bad option. I mean, the camera has the Sony E-mount, which is still used on Sony's current lineup of cameras, so you can upgrade your camera and still use the same lenses.

I wanted to attach a compact APS-C camera to my telescope. Sony had the smallest and most affordable options by far, especially in 2015. So I got a used NEX-5T and ten years later I’m still embedded in the E-mount ecosystem.
