A little update on this after getting home: Not the most desirable solution but proton vpn browser ext works better than PIA. Free version is adequate for now.

Simply enabling Split Tunnel and telling PIA to bypass the VPN for Tailscale does not work now, nor has it ever worked for me on macOS. Would love to know what else you are doing on that platform to make it work.

I have the same complaints as you about PIA's macOS app so I've tried out the app, but I'm getting the error "VPN disconnected unexpectedly. Check extension permissions and Network Extension configuration." VPN extension was added, but it won't toggle.
