New Viper Ice Tools from BD
That they lied about their beacon problem and people died. And then they lied some more. Then they waited until they got a class action lawsuit against them before they issued a recall. Then their next line of beacons also failed. Then their next line also failed. Every company has recalls. The diff

What kind of mechanisms could I use to improve belay devices in terms of safety?
No There’s several that lock by default The most popular for decades has been https://www.rei.com/product/151970/petzl-grigri-belay-device But that’s still not a reason for you to develop and patent your own solution, especially a small, light one that gradually slows you down like an auto-belay htt

Grigri purchase
I mean…. They changed the geometry a bit and the new ones have a wider and slightly different range of ropes they are designed to accept. I seem to recall the old ones being grippier but it might just be that we all had thicker ropes back then. I see zero reason to think the grigri 1 is not perfectl

did I get scammed?
Looks like a GriGri, is packaged like a GriGri. Sold by Petzl. If it also tastes like a GriGri you should be good to go. Like others said checking the serial number should be the ultimate confirmation, but this looks completely fine.

from this description I think they mean 'tunneling'. would make me nervous with a standard atc but totally fine with a grigri, and is demonstrated in this video from petzl at 5:30

Mast climbing with a GriGri
Petzl has an article on using a grigri for ascending a rope. Obviously you need the correct training to do so safely. If you just mean approved use based on context and not application, then sure. They have other devices designed for “rope access”. https://www.petzl.com/INT/en/Sport/Ascending-a-rope

Bro's back at it again, but this this time it's on the side of a public road.
He's also using the wrong gear for what he's doing. He should be using a locking belay device like a GRIGRI that locks when hands come off it. In a super cool tactical situation if you get shot in your belay hand you don't fall, which is probably nice. In a situation like this if he slips or his han

Breaking up with my belay partner
To be a bit pedantic, the main reason for the accident was because he “petzl death gripped” the grigri closed (which prevents the camming mechanism from working) in addition to letting go with his brake hand to feed her slack from the top side 😭 What’s really messed up is that if he was completely h

Carabiners
I only buy from shops that are at least somewhat specialists in climbing gear. Lately I've been liking HowNot2. They're a relatively newer company but they're climbers and route developers, they tend to have good stuff at good prices, and before they were a shop they were an amateur gear testing lab

Belay device for lifeline
I'm not a rope climber either but used to climb for an arborist Grigri are locking/assisted breaking devices, not fall arrest devices, we always had to back them up with something, at least a prusik knot or use a formal fall arrestor like the ASAP, kong backup, something with teeth. It's really impo
