GriGri vs. ClickUp: Why does the GriGri remain the default for beginners when the ClickUp feels more intuitive to me?
Personally, I prefer autotube-style devices (ATC Pilot, Mega Jul, Smart etc.) over the Grigri. The position for holding the device open is far more intuitive and also makes it easier to control the brake strand at the same time. I started with a Giga Jul (it's unfortunately very picky with ropes and

Left Evac technique
A) NSP, as an educational organization, can’t do anything about your local mountain’s protocol for self evacuation. So there’s no one to report them to there. B) I’d recommend getting a lot of supporting documentation from the manufacturer about proper and improper use of their device. I’ve never he

Need advice on prioritizing alpine / ski touring / ice gear purchases
You dont need 2 pairs of crampons just get the some petzl lynx. Get a avalanch kit and learn how to use it. Dont buy used rope when starting out (pitches are mostly 60m in the alps) Invest in better ice tools from the start or buy em used (Petzl quark is a good start and pretty affordable) a ATC wil

What would be the perfect belay device for you?
Yeah I've heard those complaints too. I think the slack issue petzl tried to solve with the neox, but definitely still far from perfect and is actually a little bit more unreliable than the grigri.

Belay device recs
Skip Petzl’s products. Better camming products exist (Trango Vergo or Edelrid Pinch), so there’s no reason to consider a grigri family. Similarly, if the goal of the Neox is “tube style” simplicity, get a tube. Many brands offer semi auto locking (same class as Petzl’s products) without moving parts

8.8mm rope too small for a few specific sport/trad routes
As others are saying, make sure it’s a single-rated rope and be aware of rope wear. Also make sure your belay device is OK to use it. I know the grigri is the go-to belay device for a lot of climbers and 8.9-11mm is the recommended diameter to use with it. If memory serves me correctly the Petzl Rev

Weight limit sport climbing?
Even top roping with that difference will be hard. Leading with a resistor will still be quite a challenge and unsafe. You lead, then z clip or mount a resistor like the Ohmega and he follows to clean. Meanwhile he can start loosing weight and then lead when it comes to 40-50 kg of difference, but w

Finally got my new RIG
Never tried a spark, most of our gear at work is Petzl or Edelrid. I’m the opposite of you and absolutely flying with an ID if I take my hand off my ‘brake’ rope. It was either ID or an old school figure 8 descender + prusik. Besides, we strictly use IDs for rescues so I have a ton of experience wit

I am a crappy belayer
Hi, As someone mentioned already - a slightly thinner (and newer rope) tends to belay easier as it feeds nicer through a device. Also make sure the belay device is suitable for the specific rope diameter. Not applicbale to sport climbing, but for instance my half ropes are 7,7mm and I always need to
