IMO, just get a Grigri. The Revo can be a little... contrived. Neither are "safer" than the other, both are assisted braking devices. Climbing accidents rarely come from any kind of equipment failure, it is far more likely to be from user error and complacency. Do partner checks, check your knots, t

Weekly Question Thread (aka Friday New Climber Thread). ALL QUESTIONS GO HERE

This question comes up twice a year, every year, probably based on course schedules. Climbing gear, especially belay devices, are pretty much optimized. Edelrid spent lots of time and money with people with decades of experience designing climbing gear and was able to make the pinch, which by popula

Looking for a carabiner for Mega Jul 2 and GriGri, can I have some help? Also, I have a couple inquiries about belay devices.

Edelrid Bruce for the mega jul 2, any small offset D for the Grigri. You do not want to use an HMS. Petzl suggests the sm'd

Help with choosing climbing gear

Try on harnesses and hang in them if they’ll let you. Buy what’s most comfortable, they’re like shoes and nobody can tell you what’s going to feel good for you. Get a Grigri and locking carabiner (I’d recommend a Petzl SMD, but any locking carabiner will work).

Oppinions on Petzl Rig and alternatives

Answer the guys question folks. In addition to the Petzl stuff I have used both the Edelrid Megawatt and also the Sklotec Sirius. I’ve also climbed on the CMI clutch some. Megawatt is great, super easy to get the rope in and out and very intuitive to use. It also has approved one handed operation wh

Carabiners

I only buy from shops that are at least somewhat specialists in climbing gear. Lately I've been liking HowNot2. They're a relatively newer company but they're climbers and route developers, they tend to have good stuff at good prices, and before they were a shop they were an amateur gear testing lab

I see you're in Columbus - if you're climbing TR in the local gym, you don't need your own belay device as they're provided for you. If you're interested in leading or climbing outside, the standard assisted braking device is a Grigri and they can be found from REI or used on Ebay.

How does this look for a beginer setup

Symmetrical wear on the Grigri isn't an issue when it's bombproof. I've been using the same Grigri and carabiner for over a decade and neither carabiner or Grigri is showing any wear near the hole. My Grigri is most worn where the rope travels through it. Why a D-shaped carabiner? Best strength to w
