Mast climbing with a GriGri

Self belaying is not an approved use of a grigri. There are some climbers that go against the recommendation, but they know the techniques and equipment well enough that they wouldn't have had to ask your question years before they do it. Don't kill yourself with a grigri. Petzl makes equipment for

What is your go to gear for TRS or LRS (Lead/Top rope solo) ?

I use the atc since I’m coming down on both lines, it gives me a slow rappel and since I’m rarely coming down more than 100 feet I’m not worried about timing. The failure that Petzl warns about is specifically when using a tow cord on the shunt. I’m not using one, I’m rotating my wrist slightly to m

which belay device to use?

Petzl neox avoids the bad manoeuvers you can have with a grigri

What would be the perfect belay device for you?

Yeah I've heard those complaints too. I think the slack issue petzl tried to solve with the neox, but definitely still far from perfect and is actually a little bit more unreliable than the grigri.

What would be the perfect belay device for you?

I think the perfect belay device would be the most clunky expensive thing ever. Petzl I'D? I prefer a Mega Jul over Grigri

Feeding rope into ID on long drops

Right I just mean I’ve trained that intuition away because of Petzl (and similar) devices, GriGri included. I’d love to get it back with a Spark/Sirius in hand some time though.

Belay device recs

Skip Petzl’s products. Better camming products exist (Trango Vergo or Edelrid Pinch), so there’s no reason to consider a grigri family. Similarly, if the goal of the Neox is “tube style” simplicity, get a tube. Many brands offer semi auto locking (same class as Petzl’s products) without moving parts

Why no more ATCs?

Because assisted braking devices are both safer (will USUALLY work even if you screw up) and more convenient (little to no hand strength required to stop a fall or hold a hanging climber). That applies both to grigri-style devices (I don't really like the Grigri TBH) and to autotube-style devices (I

What belay device should I get?

neox is better than a grigri. It's more idiot proof. other non-petzl assisted devices are supposed to be good as well - there are some you can even use with two ropes for trad.

Finally got my new RIG

Never tried a spark, most of our gear at work is Petzl or Edelrid. I’m the opposite of you and absolutely flying with an ID if I take my hand off my ‘brake’ rope. It was either ID or an old school figure 8 descender + prusik. Besides, we strictly use IDs for rescues so I have a ton of experience wit
