What belay device should I get?

the only main difference is that the Neox has a spinning wheel that makes it easier to lead belay Also makes misuse way more dangerous in many cases. Most assisted belay devices have a slight chance of locking up even if you didn't hold the brake rope (in no circumstance you should let go of the bra

Anybody using Beal Birdie for lead climbing? What’s your thoughts?

See, this is a very common misunderstanding about the grigri. It locks up most of the times when you let go of it entirely with just the weight of the climber on it. It doesn't always do so. The grigri locks up if it has enough friction in it, but many things can reduce friction through it: very flo

New Routesetting program - tips and tricks

2x static ropes, 1x dynamic 1 static is your backup, and has a fall arrest device like a petzl ASAP with an ASAPsorber attached The dynamic and other rstatic are your working and haul lines, you're already used to those The ASAP allows you to go hands free and no catastrophe knots which is lovely, j

New Petzl Belay Device

Eh maybe? Rig and ID are rated as "Auto Locking". Grigri is rated as "Assisted Braking". I have no idea how the grillon is rated when off of it's included rope. I know in single mode they say you can go hands free without tying it off, but that is in the context of the full assembly (device + rope)

Weekly Question Thread (aka Friday New Climber Thread). ALL QUESTIONS GO HERE

Shouldn't make much of a difference as long as you keep pulling after the anti-panic engages. Alternatively you can manually push down on the brake with your thumb when lowering. Obviously not recommended by Petzl but the combination of thick ropes and lightweight children kinda doesn't leave you an

What belay device should I get?

Think of the mechanism for a second (it's basically the same in both Grigri and Neox), what would cause it to trigger if the brake strand isn't being loaded during a fall? In Grigri it's friction inside the mechanism that can trigger it but they've practically removed that option with the Neox as th

Weekly Chat and BS Thread

you need to be cautious about climbing above your device since a fall could break your back This is a common misconception about falling on static rope. Yes, if you tie into a static line or a runner, cinch your knot up real good and take a factor 1 fall onto it, you will absolutely get hurt, and pr

GriGri vs Edelrid Pinch vs Beal Birdie?

Also, obviously, geometric assisted brake devices are also an option, like the pilot or jul² I feel like I trust these a lot more because the mechanical action is much more simple. Moving parts can at least in theory jam and render a camming action useless. Not that I've ever heard of a grigri jammi

Daily Discussion Thread: spray/memes/chat/whatever allowed

Point to where I say the critiques of the vergo or tube devices are mechanical? I highlighted user habits with regard to hand and body placement. The vergo is designed for you to stand parallel with the wall, it is users who choose not to. All of the devices are designed for you to control the brake

Petzl neox discussion

As someone who worked in a gym, I would hate to be a setter when these are possibly in the setting cabinet. They look unnervingly like grigris, and I would be worried if I accidentally grabbed this to set on a rope with the reduced friction. Otherwise I like the idea of this from a climber's perspec
