They are pretty similar, I've been using NordVPN for years and and switched to SurfShark recently and it's slightly smoother, always fast, better app and better value. But not a huge difference.

I couldn't get my (nord) VPN to work at all, I couldn't find any "app" that I could install and it would not work when I tried to command line stuff. This is the right answer. I can't tell you how many times the new version straight up refuses to connect. I had to stop and restart the service over and over again.
