I’ve been on the road for a while and this is definitely not a plug for a luggage company, but I’ve found the best combo for me is a 40L backpack from nomatic along with their collapsible backpack. They are not cheap but the quality and ergonomics are great. You can be one bag for travel by folding

Help me pick between two backpacks
Nomatic bags are not great lookers, but depending on what you like, they're either the best feeling or the worst feeling bags.
