Belay device recs

I like the mammut smart 2.0. I think it's normally 50 bucks, but REI has it on sale etc. It has no moving parts in it but uses an interior pinching surface that interfaces with the rope and caribiner to assist lock if the rope starts feeding too quickly (someone is falling). With a single mechanism

Belay carabineer

Yeah, silly me for not mentioning my belay device. I use Mammut Smart 2.0, from the manual it says: "To guarantee optimum functioning of the Smart 2.0, the use of a Smart HMS or a similar symmetrical, round-profile HMS carabiner is recommended." What bothers me here is the phrase "symmetrical, round

Belay Devices

I think one of the, if not the safest, device now is the Mammut smart 2.0 + smarter addon. It is easier to learn than the grigri and therefor way less prone to user error and it is my go-to device when I am teaching new people how to belay.

Gyms Worldwide Increasingly Ban Tube-Style Belay Devices in Favor of ABDs

Look up the Mammut Smart 2.0. It functions like an ATC but has assisted breaking.

which belay device to use?

Mammut Smart 2.0 is really nice for single pitch sport, much easier to feed slack for lead belay compared to a grigri and the assisted breaking bites very hard like a grigri. I know people will say that it’s fine to lead belay with a grigri, but the safe way (without disengaging the cam) is very fin

Looking for gear

Black Diamond sells full kits for rope climbing if you're looking for a bundle. Also, trust me on this, you probably want to get some loose powder chalk and a chalk bag if your area allows it. Still use the liquid chalk, but for the price and how quickly it runs out you'll save money in the long run

Carabiner for ATC Pilot?

Hi! I personally use theOcun HMS Condor Screw but one that I liked a lot (and 3 person that I know have) is the Mammut Smart HMS 2.0 screw. Is impossible to make a mistake because the system of it doesn't allow you to use it if you don't set it correctly. It's totally fools proof, hence, it's good f

which belay device to use?

I'll toss in my vote for the mammut smart 2.0. It's cheap compared to grigri money, and not because it isn't durable or well made. Put the money saved towards a belay class at a local gym, or through a local guide in your area. I belay with one, lead and top-rope, indoor and outdoors, and have been
