I second the ThinkPad P1. You would want the P1 instead of an X1 extreme. The P1 is a true workstation system with professional grade nvidia graphics that have ISV certifications for the apps you'll be using for your engineering stuff. Apparenty the touchpad from the ThinkPad X1 Extreme is highly-regarded and fits. That's a cursory search and will have to look more into it but it's a start! Seems to be available on Amazon and AliExpress from what I've seen. Probably can be sourced elsewhere as well.
