What laptop to get for remote working lawyer?

I use a thinkpad x1 carbon with a touchscreen I bought at microcenter. I’m a former computer engineer turned patent litigator and I lean on it about as much as you could imagine. The GPU can run several 4K panels if I want. Chassis is also solid and the output ports are unlikely to flake out by the

What kind of laptop y'all using?

If I were at home most of the time, I’d get a cheaper laptop and a nicer desktop. Why pay for the portability and worse specs if you can afford to be attached to the wall? For on the go, I know tons of reporters do just fine with whatever cheapie laptop Walmart or Amazon has on sale at the time. Tha

Upgrading from Intel MacBook Air (Windows + Cybersecurity + Vibecoding workflow) - i7 vs i9 vs Windows laptop?

If you don’t need Windows, get an Apple Silicon. If you need Windows, get a Windows laptop. As someone who loves the build of the MBP, I can really recommend a Dell XPS. Magnesium case and carbon inside (haven’t looked at them for a while now though, hope they didn’t change it). Or look at the Lenov

Dell Alternatives?

We use Lenovo X1 Carbons and have had an overall pretty good experience. Like any vendor the biggest failure points we see are the usb ports that people abuse. Internally we rarely see hardware failures.

Just installed Ubuntu on my T14 Gen 6, really can't get this smoothness on Windows...

I use Debian on my x1 carbon gen 10. I was using Debian 12 for the longest time. Updated to Debian 13 a month ago. It’s very reliable and stable. kde alone makes it a worthwhile upgrade over gnome with Ubuntu imo The only downside to Debian is that they don’t update things often, so it may not be th

What's a good budget laptop for Linux (for my son)?

I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 8 on eBay and it has been great. You can get a Gen 6 to Gen 8 for under $300. I personally use LM 22.3 Cinnamon but I have tried an ungodly amount of distros using a usb drive and they all worked great!

What's one product that used to be built like a tank but is now built like a regret?

My partner's got a 3 or 4 year old Lenovo X1 Carbon and it's actually been super solid. Kind of surprised.

Install 42 or wait for 43 to be fixed as a new user?

I've been using 43 Gnome from the day it came out. I have had zero issues. Although it's ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 which is generally well supported. I would say, start with 42. In a few months upgrade to 43. That's what I would do as a new user to Linux.

Buying my first ThinkPad: T14P (2025) vs P14S (2024) vs X1 Carbon Gen 11 (2023)?

Update guys! I was offered a used X1 Carbon Gen 10, “maxed out” with i7 (probably the P chip), 32GB RAM, 1TB and 2.8K OLED screen. The price: $600 USD! But the setback: broken webcam… but I can get an external one for under $50. I’ll meet with the seller to check its specs and condition in a couple
