Well, I have a T14 Gen 3 AMD which has been serviced so much, every component except the screen has been swapped out by a Lenovo technician. It still does strange knocking noises when in sleep mode. So yeah, nothing remotely similar happened to my two older thinkpads (X1 Extreme Gen 2 and W530).

But unless you're using something like Arch or some little-used app someone hosted on github, you rarely, if ever need to download tarballs of code and run MAKE scripts anymore.
