If this was a few years ago, I would have said passive is the only way to go for a serious hi-fi setup. But a lot has changed in the last few years. DSP has become much cheaper and more common. And high-performance powered speakers have become cheaper and more accessible. The simple reality is that

Looking for a good set of pc speakers for around $200-$300

Adam D3V or Kali Audio LP-UNF if you care about how well a speaker measures. If you want a dedicated subwoofer output to expand to 2.1 later, Kanto Ora (or Ora4). Just for the vibes I also like the Creative Labs Pebble Nova, but there's very little data or user stories out there in the wild.

If you're in Europe, then the Kanto Ora4 should be available there and are worth demoing if you can. Also check out the ELAC Debut ConneX. Maybe even consider studio monitors like the Adam T5V.

Most important things to upgrade in a setup.

I just upgraded my speakers to Kanto Ora4 and put my PC on a mount to make space. Game changer for immersion without headphones and obviously for music.

Oh, sorry I missed that. 3ft is quite close. But that's also a good thing since £250-300 is not a ton of budget to work with for speakers and possibly an amp. But since you don't need larger speakers with a ton of output, that does make this much more workable. On the powered speaker side, the Kanto
