Try hide.me they have a free tier. All these pro vpn (crap) apps won't help you with anything. Their only purpose is to collect your data.

I have just left China after being there for a few months. I used Letsvpn and had no issues. Try to get that one if possible. I had succes using HideMe VPN in the free version but it wasn't as good. Hopefully you can get those.
