Neumann KH120 II underwhelming?
Studio monitors aren’t supposed to have a traditional “wow” effect. You didn’t clarify what you meant by that or what exactly were you underwhelmed about, so it sounds a bit like you might’ve expected a hifi speaker wow effect. Studio monitors are designed to sound neutral. They aren’t supposed to e

What's your unpopular opinion in the audiophile world?
We have different ears, brains and we can feel the exact same emotions in a very different ways. This goes for music and sounds. Exemple: I love the synth and percussion hyper compressed attack at the start of Kim Wilde's Cambodia. I heard them on my oncle's Quad ESL-57 first and he hated it and muc

Small monitor recommendations
Kali IN-8. Don’t be fooled by their low price, they fight in a much higher price category. 3-way, coaxial mid+tweeter, and 8” woofer below 280Hz I think. Great neutral monitors. Pretty large for a nearfield though, so the IN-5 might be worthy of consideration as well. Only 2Hz less low end extension

Decision: Are used Focal Twin 6 mk1 a worthwhile upgrade…?
I’ve had Focal Solo 6 Be and CMS 40 (and Shape 65 and Alpha 65). The Solo was truly a magnificent monitor, the others haven’t been as spectacular. I used to drag my Solos to studios, but one singer had trouble with them since they were so revealing… Difficult to compare with the CMS 40 due to the si

Whether the LS50WII are still the best performers in their price category
no but I own the focal shape 65, people told me that the genelec beat my focals, that the adams aren't far behind, and I have heard a ton of hifi speakers in the past. I have seen a lot of unfavorable reviews about KEF for their price point as well. in all likelihood, a set of sony CSS5 bookshelves

Monitor Upgrade question
I haven't heard the APS or the newer Adams, but based on the Adam's measurements and having used the Focal Shape 65 for a few years, I'd direct you towards Kali IN-5 / IN-8 without hesitation. The IN-8 is simply a better, more neutral monitor than the Shape 65, and costs half as much. The IN-5 shoul

I found the SE Electronics Munro Egg 150 studio monitors at a local marketplace for 800€. They are getting a bit old, but the design is very well reasoned, and I've seen these for example at Tesseract's Acle Kahney's studio photos a few albums ago. They used to cost something like $2500-$3000 new. I

Suggestions for new audio setup
What a coincidence, I used the Shape 65 for a few years and now switched to Kali IN-8 v2! In short, Focals have their own sound, Kali much less so. That doesn’t make the Kali’s cold and clinically analytic, instead they’re what I’d call warm neutral. First impressions of the bass was that it’s subst
