my friend is an audio engineer and has the little Focals (shape 50 maybe?) and loves them You mean 3-4 inch speakers right? not the whole unit? I think these are 5 but still. Whatever their smallest ones are, focal has been incredible any time I’ve heard them

Feedback noise!!
Sometimes if I have a wonky cable that produces and intermittent issue, then usually touching or wiggling the cable will change the issue and so I know that's definitely the problem. So have you tried touching the cables, wiggling them or pulling plugs in and out of the jacks when the issue occurs?

How does a better expensive monitors change things?
I went from JBL LSR305 for many years to Focal Shape 50. The Focals were about $1000 for the pair on sale and the JBLs were maybe $300 for the pair. The Focals sound very noticeably better during music playback. I have no regrets about it. The audio interface also makes a big difference. My Apollo s
