just to update - instead of wasting my time with endgame support (where I'd likely hear 'it's by design' ;)), I followed the fix in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/EndGameGear/comments/1lezlsa/fix_for_xm2w_stiffinconsistent_click/ Worked like a charm! Both sides work properly now.
