Why no more ATCs?
I'm old school and have fully switched. I use the Edelrid Pinch and the Edelrid Giga Jul. Good form and diligence are hugely important, but predictably fallible.

Gyms Worldwide Increasingly Ban Tube-Style Belay Devices in Favor of ABDs
There are people that didn't need a seat belt for 41 years too, but then they needed it. You don't have to start using one, but its probably a good idea. To me it is not about skills. You can do everything right and still get hit by ice-/rock-fall or you can have a medical emergency. The ABDs offer

Is this enough for top roping? Desc
As long as your buddy is experienced and knows what he is doing. (Not just says he knows, but truly is knowledgeable and has hands on experience.) Then you should be fine. When it comes to gear: If you are setting up top rope from above, try to find out what you will be anchoring to. Is it bolts? Ar

Weekly Question Thread (aka Friday New Climber Thread). ALL QUESTIONS GO HERE
The ATC is ancient technology and you should belay with an assisted braking device. Petzl Grigri, Edelrid Pinch, Black Diamond ATC Pilot, Mammut Smart, Edelrid Giga Jul.... these are all devices that are objectively better for belaying.

Monthly Trad Climber Thread
I climb trad almost excluseively with double ropes, the Edelrid Mega/Giga Jul completely negates this problem in my opinion, just the perfect device for the job. I've tried grigri single rope with tagline, the tagline is just not a great solution when you can have two 8mm ropes instead. It sounds st

What’s everyone’s favorite anticross loading carabiner?
It’s not the tools fault. You switched to a new device that you’re not used to and now you’re having problems because you’re either not trained or not practiced enough with it. Don’t blame the tool, especially when you’re a new user of it. FYI, I proficiently use a Mammut SMART, Edelrid Jul2 and Gig

Weekly Question Thread (aka Friday New Climber Thread). ALL QUESTIONS GO HERE
I use a GriGri or an Edelrid GigaJul. I haven't touched a regular tube device in years. I understand that a locking device will provide a sliiiightly harder catch, but I don't think this would make the difference for the top piece of gear to pop, especially with dynamic belaying and rope stretch I a

Brake Assisted Belay devices
My 60m edelrid 9.3 bicolor TC edition is a great rope aside from the twisting. Climbed a day with a partner from a FB group and they had the same thing to say about their 70m version of the same rope. For trad routes that wander or have a few traverses, it can definitely get bad quickly. My buddy’s

First Belaying Device
Guide mode stuff with the Neox is terrible/unadvised. The spinning wheel is crap and goes to shit in sand. Kind of a shit device all around to be honest. Petzl stuff is usually so dang good, they really made a stinker with the Neox. Glad Edelrid addressed the low MBS issue with the Pinch. If I didn’t
