GriGri vs. ClickUp: Why does the GriGri remain the default for beginners when the ClickUp feels more intuitive to me?
I’ve never used a click up but I’ve used a grigri for seven years. I’ve climbed in the UK, across Europe, in Thailand and Australia, and with climbers from around the world, and with a few exceptions every single climber I’ve met has a grigri. When I meet someone who doesn’t, the first question is “

Belay device recs
Can’t recommend the climbing technology click up enough, used it the last year for indoor aswell as sport and trad, great for top roping and lead climbing, catching with it is great, personally it’s my go to, always take a click up and an atc, but generally will reach for the click up.

Which belay device to pick
gigajul is awesome but not with gym topropes, which are a bit much for it. belay devices are tools designed to match a job, not a single one size fits all thing. You want something to learn to belay indoors on, that is probably any regular toothed belay device, or an assisted device. The regular too

What is the best belay device for a left-handed 13 year old?
I often switch my hand when belaying so can do left or right. I have a petzl reverso- but any tube device is good for either hand. For an auto locking device I use a click up. It’s effectively the same action as the tube devices and isn’t handed for left or right.

GriGri vs. ClickUp: Why does the GriGri remain the default for beginners when the ClickUp feels more intuitive to me?
I've got similar feelings, I can't belay on ClickUp to save my life but I strongly believe that AlpineUp is the best thing since we had sliced bread. It allows much faster and safer belaying in my opinion.

GriGri vs. ClickUp: Why does the GriGri remain the default for beginners when the ClickUp feels more intuitive to me?
I also think that the structural distinction between the ClickUp and standard assisted-braking tubes, such as the Smart or Mega Jul, is an important variable. The lack of a designed thumb-catch or ergonomic method to momentarily hold the ClickUp open while paying out slack often necessitate an awkwa

GriGri vs. ClickUp: Why does the GriGri remain the default for beginners when the ClickUp feels more intuitive to me?
i think the Smart 2 and bd Pilot and similar is better for sport climbing lmao and for rapping on a multi, Grigri is still the best the one time i used a click up, i had more trouble on it than any other belay device i tried (for the first time)

Wildcountry Movement Belay Device experiences
I agree with the core of it, that pistol grip devices are mostly just fluff, however the praise for the Jul is misplaced. I own a megadjuk and it has been my only device for many years. I like it's versatility, that you can use it in guide mode, and with half ropes. It sucks with all of my ropes tho

Is the Trango Vergo a good pick?
Just seems like they were designed to change the game, and to try to become the new standard, since the community has been stuck on the grigri for going on three decades. Problem with that is the game doesn't need to be changed, anything the grigri needed petzl came along and changed in the next ite

GriGri vs. ClickUp: Why does the GriGri remain the default for beginners when the ClickUp feels more intuitive to me?
That is a fair assessment. Ascending the rope or hauling a climber under tension is arguably the scenario where the GriGri's mechanical advantage is most apparent. For my own routine, I still find myself reaching for the ClickUp simply because it feeds rope so smoothly. When belaying top-ropers or l
