Unfortunately I only can exchange them for another pair in my country. I bought them directly from Bose and there isn’t an option to return them. If it means anything, I have the Bowers and Wilkins PX8 S2, and the Bose quietcomfort ultra 2, and the latter are better in both the sound and ANC department. The Bowers have better build quality. If I were to be taking a flight, the Bose would be coming with me

The material splitting is a known defect. Bose support will replace them if you politely bug them about it But the replacement will do the same thing after a few months.
