Anyone Using Auratones?
Auratone sells their A2-30 amplifier that they make to drive their passive monitors. It's pretty budget conscious. I have it, plus a pair of the newer passive Auratones. I think they're great for checking your midrange, and the A2-30 is a nice small form factor that can fit on your desk. Mine sits b

I improved my monitoring situation, mixing is way easier and now I’m finding most plugins useless.
We can talk anecdotes and opinions all day. If you look at the EBU Tech paper section 2.2, they specify to 40 Hz. The KH80 is -4 dB at 55 Hz. So granted, they don’t quite get there, but I’ll say that even 60 Hz plus some headphones is sufficient. https://tech.ebu.ch/docs/tech/tech3276.pdf https://ww

What are the differences between Auratone 5c and Fostex 6301b?
Basically I was wondering if I should save up for the Auratone, or get a fostex right now for under half the price!! Will I be missing out on much? I would 1000% get the Fostex. It's the same KIND of thing, same frequency range, about the same size. It's a very common grot box in the industry even i

What are the differences between Auratone 5c and Fostex 6301b?
Yes, that's what they are for, checking the mid range and it's the same thing with the Fostex 6301, they've all been around since the 80s. I think the Fostex has been more popular in the broadcast industry than for music, but they are also all about the mid range. Ultimately, like all things monitor

Give up on trying to make mix sound good on phone speaker?
Question for you - how do you "soften/smear" high frequencies? I believe I understand the sound you describeexactly but I'm not sure how to attain that sound in the highs. The Avantone Mixcube is great advice for OP. I came here to say the same. Of he gets his mix sounding good on the 'cube, it will

Do you know if iLoud Micro Monitors good enough to mix with on a regular basis?
You could give a mix engineer that knows what he's doing, someone who knows Avantone Mixcubes really well -- give him a single mono Avantone. And an amateur who doesn't know what their doing could have a high end flawless room & monitors. The experienced mix engineer is going to outmix the other guy

(New guy) Drums sound fine in headphones but are wayyy too echoey on small speakers
Could be phase. This is the fun of mixing. The speaker test. Where the mix sounds great on something then elsewhere falls apart. I got some headphones from avantone that let you switch from stereo to mono and then another setting that emulates their mixcubes which messes with midrange. These things

Looking for compact desktop speakers
There's the Avantone Mixcube (and the other harder to source flavors), 6.5" cube. Just a tad pricey. And of course literally just the one example I could find. But yeah, you've listed several options. The RB42 at 8.7" seems the best bet so far outside of DIY. I'm sticking to the passive requirement
